On April 8, 2025, Canada announced the implementation of the United States Surtax Order (Motor Vehicles 2025), with the new tariff measures taking effect the following day, April 9. The measures impose import taxes on a range of passenger and commercial vehicles, including those powered by gasoline, diesel, electric, and hybrid engines, spanning 19 separate 8-digit HS classifications. Canada’s Finance Minister, François-Philippe Champagne, stated that these tariffs will stay in effect until the United States removes its duties targeting the Canadian automotive industry. Notably, products already en route to Canada on the implementation date will not be subject to the new charges. The tariffs apply equally to both brand-new and previously owned vehicles.
